In the crossborder region the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany the mining industry was the heart of the countries economies. After the closure of the mines in the 1960s, lots of the remains were demolished, especially in the Dutch side of the region. In Belgium, some shafts are still working. One of them is situated on the C-Mine suite in Genk.
