Saint Peter’s Fortress
Luikerweg 80b, 6212 NH Maastricht
Saint Peter’s Fortress was built on St. Peter’s Mount in the early 18th century. Its initial purpose was military, allowing the people of Maastricht to defend the city from the French. While successful for a long time, the city had to surrender in the end. Saint Peter’s Fortress is perched high above the Meuse river on the south side of Maastricht and is directly connected with St Pietersberg hill via an intricate system of underground tunnels.
